“The Dark cannot claim what Light does not surrender”

-C.L. WIlson

A Personal Note from Ellen

Thoughts on the Presidential Election and What’s Next. (Please read this if you are concerned about Trump having too much power, about Net Neutrality, or Just need to know you’re not alone).

This has been a particularly hard time for me and for millions of other Americans; we had an election and while Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, Donald Trump won the electoral votes to become President of the United States. I would have liked the election to be about issues, but instead it became about values, and it got really ugly.

I personally don’t want to live in a country that thrives on hatred and division and for that reason, I have fought for social justice all my life. Because of that I am grappling with some big decisions and I know others are as well from the conversations I’ve read on Facebook.

Throughout the election process, I tried to stick to the issues. I did not condone or participate in any name calling, and I cringed every time I saw someone calling other people names on either side and still do. I did not unfriend anyone because of their beliefs during the election, but I did unfriend anyone who was vile and I did report to Facebook anyone who crossed the line into calling for violence.

Fortunately, there were only a few of those. And, I tried to listen and understand the other side. Ultimately, it became clear to me that people believe what they believe, and then find the evidence to support their beliefs and you just aren’t going to be in alignment with everyone.

I voted for Hilary Clinton. After the election, like many others, I was stunned. I was sad. I cried. I got depressed. I got scared. I went in and out in waves and still do. I thought there was something wrong with me, that I was taking “too long” because people were saying “get over it”, “be positive”, and “move on”. But,I also read pieces that spoke to me and made me realize that a lot of people were going through similar feelings and that, in fact, I realized that just being positive and moving on actually be dangerous.

Now, I’ve often heard that it is not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters. Well, I couldn’t stop reacting to it, and I was feeling absolutely sick, so I knew I had to do deal with it. But, I was conflicted. I didn’t want to unfriend people. I always thought of myself as an open-minded fair person, but I was having a hard time reconciling that with cutting people out of my life.

Finally, I came to the conclusion that my sanity and my health were more important and it had to be okay for me to do what I felt I had to do. And so, I started removing people from my life on Facebook, not everyone who disagreed with me but some of them.  I also started confronting those who I didn’t want to remove from my life asking them to just stop where I felt it went over the line and to my surprise, I felt relieved and empowered! I still get a pain in my stomach from some of what I read, but I’m getting stronger each time I deal with it.

So, here’s the bottom line, this election has changed me. I cannot do nothing. I have to get involved and stay involved. We all do. You can’t just vote every four years and think the rest will take care of itself, it won’t. I have seen families ripped apart and marriages ended over this election. It’s heartbreaking. I just hope that our country is not completely torn apart by it.

I lived through the 60’s, the Vietnam war and the civil rights movement and I know this is going to be a another very tumultuous period in our history, because we will not let the rights of our citizens be taken away and lose our country.

Ben Franklin was once asked if we had a Republic or a Monarchy and he replied, “A Republic, if you can keep it”. Our job now, will be to keep it.

The good thing is there are millions of people who are committed to keeping it, regardless of who they voted for. Already, groups are forming to fight anything that undermines our current laws and form of government. We are giving millions of dollars in small donations and supporting the cause to stop this from happening as well as local and national newspapers that have broken the important stories that will help us keep our Republic. And if that doesn’t move you, maybe this will… Net Neutrality is on the line.

Net Neutrality preserves our right to communicate freely on the Internet. Without Net Neutrality, cable and phone companies could carve the Internet into two lanes: a slow one and a fast one.And ISP’s could charge a fee for preferential treatment and those who cannot pay would be left behind; small businesses could be put out of business. And to make matters even worse, ISP’s could slow down the content of one’s competitors or block political opinions it disagreed with. If you think this won’t impact you, think again!

So, I hope you will join us.

The best thing you can do right now, is help elect Foster Campbell of Louisiana as Senator. There is a runoff Dec. 10th. If he becomes the senator then moderate Republicans and Democrats will have to power to stop Trump from going to far on any single issue that they believe is dangerous to our country.  They need donations at: www.fostercampbell2016.com

Call your Representative
Call your Senators
Call the President now and after January 21st.

How to Find More Time to Write, Publish, & Profit from Your Books!

One of the biggest obstacles authors tell me they have is finding the time to work on their book project. Here is a 5-step guide to help you get started and stay motivated so you can write, publish, and make money with your book!

1. Decide what your goal is. It’s impossible to reach a goal if you don’t know what the goal is. Remember, the more clarity you have about your goal, the easier it will be to manifest it.

2. Figure out what your motivation is….WHY you want to get it done. There will be times when you feel frustrated, overwhelmed, disappointed, and/or rejected, and it’s easy to give up if you lose site of why you are doing it in the first place. Also, if your WHY isn’t big enough, you may find that you aren’t motivated enough to keep going. So, find your WHY and make sure it’s big enough to carry you through the tough times. And trust me, you will have them, we all do!

3. Cut it into bite-size pieces that you can tackle one at a time. If you look at what the whole project entails, it can be overwhelming. And I don’t know about you, but when I get overwhelmed, my eyes glaze over, I can’t think straight, and then I freeze. The best way to stop this from happening, is to create a step-by-step outline of what needs to be done for each writing project before you start, and then follow it. If you don’t know what steps to take, find someone who does who can give you a checklist or walk you through it.

4. Put it on your calendar. I used to wonder why projects that I really wanted to do still didn’t get done. Then, I heard Brendon Burchard say, “What doesn’t get scheduled doesn’t get done!” I realized that he was right. So, I started scheduling, and it works IF you stick to it! Do I always stick to it? I wish I could say 100%, but I’d be lying. But, the more you practice and stay committed, the better it works!

5. Set up a system of carrots and sticks. I definitely believe in the carrot approach- rewarding yourself for a job well done. I’m not as thrilled about the stick- punishing yourself for not getting it done. But, it does work for some people. Just remember, it’s not about beating up on yourself, but about delaying gratification or outing yourself for not getting it done. Another way to deal with it is to add in accountability. For instance, by telling everyone you are going to do something, it puts added pressure on you to actually get it done and if you don’t, you’ll have to face the embarrassment of not having gotten it done.

So, if you’ve been wanting to work on your book project, but haven’t been able to find time to do it, there is no better time than now. Follow these steps in order and you will be on your way!

Tech Tips

3 eBook Formatting Tips to Save you Time, Aggravation, & Money!

1. Make sure that you double check your manuscript to make sure you send the right one to your formatter-especially if you have an assistant or a third-party sending it in. If it’s wrong, it will cost you more money to fix it.

2. Once you get it back, be sure to read through it and make sure it’s right. If your paragraphs take up a whole page or close to it, they are too long and it will be more difficult to get your buyers to actually read it. Keep paragraphs to 8-or 10 lines tops.

3. Upload it as soon as possible in Kindle because Kindle will let you know if there are typos that need to be fixed. You’ll also want to preview it to see if there are additional issues with it that need to be fixed.

Follow these 3 steps and getting your formatting right will go much more smoothly!
