Letter from the Editor

Happy Chanukah!

It’s the first night of Chanukah at sundown tonight.  I love Chanukah because it is about miracles.

It’s the struggle of the Jews to restore the Temple of Jerusalem. The Greeks who ruled  at the time, wanted the Jews to give up their God and worship the Greek ones instead. The Jews refused and fought back. Led by Judah Maccabee, they  rose up,  defeated the Greeks and reclaimed the Temple.

They cleansed it. removing all Greek symbols and restoring the Jewish symbols. When they were done, they decided to celebrate. But, the Greeks had made all the oil impure.

Miraculously the Maccabees found one jar that had been overlooked. It was only supposed to last for one day, but it burned for eight. So, we light the candles of Chanukah for 8 days to celebrate this miracle.

What miracles are you celebrating this holiday season?

Not only am I celebrating Chanukah, but also having my husband at home with me. It’s a miracle he’s alive. He came within two hours of dying from an infected kidney stone so I am very grateful for that.

Also, to my Christian subscribers, clients, and students….it’s Happy Christmas Card Day! December 9th.

Sending Christmas or Holiday cards is a great way to stay connected to your customers and/or subscribers, and an easy way to do it these days is with eCards.  They come in free & the paying variety. The fun thing though is that you can find animated ones that you can’t get with traditional cards.

My favorite ones in the past have come from Blue Mountain www.bluemountain.com where you can get an unlimited 7-day trial and Jacquie Lawson who makes a limited range of amazing animated cards for $14 a year or $20 for two years http://www.jacquielawson.com/

Of course, if you have the time and the resources, sending traditional cards is still a great way to go. People can put them on the mantle and be reminded of you all through the season.

Can you believe Christmas is almost here? And that reminds me…. many people turn into a pumpkin this time of year when it comes to business, but in truth, this is a great time of year to write and launch an ebook  If you want to end the year with a bang, go to http://ellenlikes.com/schedulefreeconsult and let’s talk! Decide NOW because in a couple of weeks it will be too late!

It’s also a great time to start planning for next year! So if Christmas is too jam-packed for you to create your best-seller, then shoot for January and start the year right! http://ellenlikes.com/schedulefreeconsult

For the new year, I’m really digging deep and deciding what projects are important to me to get done next year and I’m going to be doing something I’ve never done before…more to come on that soon.

I’m also revamping the podcast.  It was pretty much ready to go, but I kept procrastinating, and then I realized why….it just wasn’t me and I wasn’t comfortable with the tone. I lost my “voice”.  I was influenced by other people. Well, I’ve  got it back, and so now, I’m redoing it.  Sometimes, things just take as long as they take. This is one of those times!

It’s also the season of giving.  I like to give to Toys to Tots. I usually give a CD for a teenager because the older kids tend to get overlooked.  To donate in your area go to Google and put in “Where to donate toys for Christmas in [your area]” or go to the Toys for Tot’s site for a drop off near you. www.toysfortots.org Send your receipt to info@theebookcoach.com for a free ebook.  (See Announcements for your choices.)

In personal news….Christen came home yesterday. He’s been gone almost a month so it’s taking a little getting used to. He didn’t really feel ready, but the insurance won’t pay for any more time in the convalescent home, so we’ll just have to figure it out as we go. But, he is getting up and around by himself using a walker. He’ll be getting physical therapy at home.

I mentioned on Facebook that I may need some additional resources to pay for all this and my pal Julie Neiman mentioned that there is a program for Veterans that it turns out my husband is eligible for. It’s a shame more people don’t know about it. If you need help taking care of a veteran, check out Angels Consulting Group (Patriot Angels) at: http://www.angelsconsultinggroup.com/patriot-angels-veterans-benefits 844-432-4040 or Veteran Angels at www.vetangels.org 1-888-319-1117

And if you’re going through a rough time with a loved one-reach out and talk to someone. It’s amazing  how many of us are going through this with parents and spouses, and it’s not easy so don’t try to be a hero, caretakers need support too!

That’s it for now…..

7 Tips to Using Goodreads to Access 40-Million+ Book Readers and Sell More Books!

Super fans drive book sales. In fact, just 19% of Americans do 79% of all non-required book reading according to The Codex Group (industry researchers). And how they find books these days tends more toward social media, author websites, and personal recommendations rather than to advertisements and bookstores. And Goodreads is the site where these fans congregate. According to Jordan Weissmann for “The Atlantic”, “In the world of books, Goodreads is just about as influential as Facebook.”

So if Goodreads is not part of your media strategy yet, now is the best time to add it in. And if you are already on Goodreads, you might want to think about an upgrade to your strategy.

Here are 7 ways to help you get started:

1. Sign up for an account. There are two types of accounts on Goodreads: a reader’s account, and an author’s account. You must sign up for a regular account first, then you can apply for the author’s program. Too many authors don’t realize that they have to have both to get the full benefit of Goodreads.

2. Create your profile. This lets potential readers know more about you so you can start to build rapport. Begin by adding your picture and bio. Don’t just give a run down of your credentials. Have fun with it. Let people into your world. And let them know why they should want to connect with you.

3. Add your books to Goodreads. If they aren’t already listed in the database, you’ll want to add them. People can’t read them or review them if  they can’t find them! To list your books, go to:

4. Add your RSS blog feeds to Goodreads. Every time you write a new blog post, it automatically appears in Goodreads once you’ve set up  your blog feed. This cuts down on your marketing time while giving you access to over 40-million more potential readers and buyers. How cool is that?

5. Give books away.  One of the best ways to get noticed on Goodreads is to give books away. There is quite a bit of misinformation out there about this feature. You used to only be able to give physical books away, but now you can give both physical books and ebooks away.  Go to: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/54220-ebookgiveaways to get started.

6. Give and get recommendations for books. When you read a book, be sure to recommend it to your friends and followers on Goodreads. Also, be sure to ask for recommendations for your books. Goodreads recommendations attract more readers, which can turn into more buyers for your books.

7. Be Active and Be Visible. The more you do, the more benefit you will get on the site. If you already write blog posts, be sure to get them onto Goodreads (See #4). Share your upcoming events, including online ones (which isn’t evident from their website, but I contacted them and asked). Even if you don’t have a book yet, you can share any writing that you’ve done on the site as well as book excerpts. Have fun with polls and quizzes; it increases interaction with your audience and people love them!  Post videos and arrange weekly Q & A sessions. (Readers can ask questions about your book and interact with you in a way that they can’t on other social-media sites.) Add a Goodreads Author widget to your website or blog to impress your visitors with your awesome book reviews. There are so many ways to use Goodreads, it’s mind-boggling.

That’s why I created Goodreads Secrets for Authors! If you want to discover all the different ways you can use Goodreads and how to do it, be sure to check it out.  This is a two-part trainingthat walks you through exactly what you need to know to become a Good Reads top user. It’s new and I still need testimonials;  I’m offering it at 50% off for Chanukah.

WordPress Hacking Help!

I recently received an email from one of my clients, Vivian Baxter, who is a tech guru.

Her sites had been hacked and they were down for a couple of days and here’s what she learned:

WordPress sites are not as secure as html sites, even the plugins are vulnerable.
And what could happen with these vicious attacks is that you could wake
up one morning and find that your sites are gone!

To prevent this from happening to you, it’s simpler, easier and better to have
all malware removed on a daily basis than to have to clean up after an
infection with the down time, the aggravation, and possible loss of all your work!

To help you Vivian has set up a special deal for her friends and clients with Sitelock for $14.99 a month.
She will also set up a firewall for $59 to keep out the Russians and Chinese who are
doing most of the hacking.
