MRI Shines Light On Internet Marketing Principles
I’ve had pain in my right hip for the past two years. I’ve done acupuncture, chiropractics, physical therapy, exercise, stretches, nothing has helped. So finally I went for an MRI. And I hate to admit this but I’m claustrophobic and can’t do a regular one so I had an open one.
When I walked in it looked like it was going to be a cake walk. I even told my husband, Christen, whom I’d brought along to hypnotize me that I didn’t think I’d be needing his services. But he came in with me anyway.
So they laid me on the table and starting loading me into the machine and I freaked. I made the technician take me out. I was surprised and upset by my reaction but I couldn’t help it. At that moment, I just wanted out-even though he and Christen kept assuring me that it was no big deal.
But it felt like a big deal to me! Then I started thinking, the way I’d gotten through an MRI in the past was to keep my eyes closed. But I noticed this time that when I was finally in the position they needed me to be in, I could see the change in the light-in other words- I knew I was “inside” the machinen and I felt boxed in.
Finally, the technician said, “Since we’re doing two different ones maybe we should start with the easier one first.” That way my head would be out in the open. So that’s what we decided to do. I still needed my husband to hypnotize me and then read to me, but I got through it.
And in the process I noticed some Internet Marketing Principles at work! What I realized was that at first I didn’t trust the technician. I didn’t know him from Adam. How did I know he would actually come if I needed him? How did I know he wouldn’t take an early lunch break and split on me. (The mind comes up with all kinds of funny things when it feels out of control!)
That reminded me that people buy from people they know like and trust and when they don’t know you, they don’t trust you! So you want to give great content and customer service so people can get to know you, like you, trust you, and BUY from you!
So I had to test him by pulling the ball he’d given me if I needed him. And when I saw that he actually came, I felt better.(That’s why you want to give a lot of VALUE in your entry products-so people can SEE results for themselves and start to trust you!)
Then I realized if I opened my eyes, I didn’t feel so closed in. And doing the easier test first got me to settle down. That made me laugh because I’m always hearing Internet Marketing Guru’s say “Do the hardest thing first and get it out of the way”. But for me, I like to warm up with a victory first then hit the hard stuff, so that’s exactly what we did.
(Tip: do what works best for you-if you need to do something easier first, do it, don’t beat yourself up because you aren’t good at doing the hardest thing first! Just don’t put it off indefnitely!)
Also if something isn’t working, and you’ve gone as far as you can with it, try something else! After 3 attemmpts at getting in the machine for the first test didn’t work, we tried doing the second one first and it worked!
And finally, I discovered that it got better when I thought about it differently. At first, I felt stuck and powerless. But when I realized that I really could get out if I absolutely had to and that I had more control than I thought, I could finally relax. And once I did that, it was still boring, laying there for an hour, but it was tolerable and I could get through it!
As Wayne Dyer says: “When you change the way you look at things and the things you look at change!”

Ellen,
What a terrific post that shows you can learn and grow from every situation–even an MRI–and apply it to your business. Happy New Year and keep up the good work and terrific teaching.

I recently learned - the hard way - that if I actually DID my homework, did the research on the keywords and on the niche, that profits are a lot easier to come by. Duh! When you sell something people want, yes, they’ll buy it!!
I’m also learning that if you want people to follow, you have to be a good leader. That’s not a talent, it’s a skill, and can be learned.
I see so many people who completely underestimate and don’t believe in themselves, too. I know, we need to trust the process, and that’s hard when we’ve been told, by those who don’t trust themselves, that we’re worthless - but go for some small victories first. Start proving to yourself that you are trustworthy. Do your homework, and have a good backend set up, and go for it.

Ellen,
Thank you for sharing your story. Two thoughts resonated with me in reading this - try a different approach, and it’s OK to do the easy thing first. I’ve been reflecting on New Year’s resolutions this weekend (naturally), and got a little down when I thought back on last year’s resolutions and the lack of progress I made.
It turns out I set out too many, wanted too much at once to change, got overwhelmed, and got nothing done. So this year I’m picking one thing. I’m going for a “small win” and then and only then will I progress - even if it’s not New Year’s Day when I take on the next challenge. I have no doubt this will work!
If you’re willing to send the pdf “7 Tips To Finding Out What Your Customers Want” I would love the opportunity to review it.
Thanks!

When I expect something to be hard, I tend to postpone it.
When I can pick an easy task to do first, that gets me in action. I can be well into the hard parts before I even realize it. They are seldom as hard as I expected them to be.

Changing attitude?
Looking at the sign-up list on a blog as a resource instead of just people that I had to write for made it easier to get back to the blog.
Good post.

Marketers need to appreciate that their “solution” may be the worst possible “help” they push on a customer. Thank you for your open-mindedness and even modeling that we can turn a noxious experience into a positive growth opportunity for everyone
I hope you’re hip is better.

I feel like you could probably teach a class on how to make a great blog. This is fantastic! I have to say, what really got me was your design. You certainly know how to make your blog more than just a rant about an issue. Youve made it possible for people to connect. Good for you, because not that many people know what theyre doing.
