Remember when you were in grade school and you had to read Shakespeare? If you’re like most kids, it was difficult to understand and you may have even gotten the Cliff notes to help you (or you may have cheated and not read Shakespeare at all)! But when you write an ebook or book, your readers don’t get Cliff notes with it, so your title, and your ebook or book, have to be self-explanatory.

That means that you can’t write a title that nobody understands the meaning of, except you! The problem is that because, as an author you are so close to your material and you know what you mean, you assume everyone else will too, but this is not always the case. And if people don’t get your title, they are never going to read your ebook or book. So it’s imperative that you get it right.

Let me give you an example:

I had a student who’s ebook was about how to turn an idea into income (which was already taken), so she came up with the title: Product Dreams: How to Turn Your Big Idea into a Profitable Reality.

What is a “Product Dream”? I had no idea what that meant and as soon as I had to ask for an explanation, I knew it wasn’t a good title. Then there’s her subtitle, “How to Turn Your Big Idea into a Profitable Reality” this tells you what the title means, but the fact that I had no idea what it meant without the subtitle, made it a no go.

And to make matters worse, after doing the research, I pointed out to her that titles with the word “product” weren’t selling on Kindle anyway, unless they were about product licensing and that was only a small part of her ebook. So, I told her to try to come up with something that was selling a lot better and that used the keyword “innovate” or “innovation” to help her come up with a better, stronger title; she came back with these 3 titles.

1. Innovation Revelations: Exposing How Savvy Entrepreneurs Can Create Breakthrough Products that Win

2. Think. Create. Sell. How Entrepreneurs Can Make and Profit from Breakthrough Innovations

3. Innovate to Create Profits: How Savvy Entrepreneurs Can Turn Real Ideas into Real Income

When you examine them, title #1, again, doesn’t really mean anything, it just sounds like she was trying to rhyme with “Innovation” (which was exactly what she was trying to do) while #2 and #3 make a lot of sense. To get started, she decided to go with #2, but I suggested she test title’s #2 and #3, as they are both strong titles.

That’s why, it’s so important to get feedback before you spend money creating your ebook or book cover and on your marketing. Had she gone with “Product Dreams” her ebook would have been dead on arrival.

That’s why you want to make SURE that you get it right BEFORE you put your ebook or book out on the market, because if people don’t “get” your title, they are going to leave faster than a bolt of lightening and you will have lost them forever; you’re not going to make any money. And when you don’t make money, it’s easy to get frustrated and start believing that writing doesn’t pay and give up.

So, don’t let that happen to you. Have people you know and trust read your ebook or book and ask them when they are finished reading it, not only if they liked it, but did they understand your title? And did it make sense in relation to what your ebook or book was about? Or, give some copies away for free in exchange for honest feedback. Either way be sure to ask these critical questions.

Do it right, and you’ll never have anyone say “I don’t get it, what does your title mean?”

To create titles that people want to buy, you have to know what they are looking for and the Internet has made it pretty easy to find out and create search-engine- optimized titles. Unfortunately, too many people don’t take advantage of it.

By using the Google Keyword Tool, you can find out the exact words that people are searching for; you want to look at the number of hits per month globally to find this out.

Ideally, you want to find keywords that get between 10,000 and 100,000 hits globally per month. Words that get in the millions of clicks tend to be too general and it’s not always clear exactly what people are looking for when they click on them.

For instance, I was working with a reflexologist who wanted to teach reflexologists how to make $100,000 a year or more. The most common keyword was “reflexology”. But someone looking up “reflexology” could be looking to learn more about reflexology, they could be looking to learn reflexology techniques, or any number of other things pertaining to reflexology. So, you have to be careful.

Even when you find good keywords in Google, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll know what people are buying, but it’s a start.

The next thing you want to do is go to Kindle and see what ebooks and books are actually selling. This will work in certain categories: fiction, children’s books and health and wellness to name a few. But it won’t work in every category.

What you need to figure out is if ebooks and books are selling well in YOUR niche. And if so, what keywords are they using and what categories are they in?

Note: Often times, you can make a lot more money self-publishing in niches that don’t sell well on Kindle, so if your niche isn’t kicking butt on Kindle don’t give up-dig deeper. Find out which titles, not on Kindle, are selling or have sold really well in your niche and consider self-publishing and/or ebook launches. (To get a free pdf go to www.ebooklaunchsecrets.com to see if this is a good option for you!)

To get back to Kindle….to sell ebooks or books there, you pretty much need to be on the first page of your category. And you can only list in two categories, so you want to pick the ones that are the least competitive. With less competition, it’s easier to get in the top 100 and that will not only insure that you sell more ebooks but it will make you a best seller. And, that’s a title every author longs to have.

Also, by picking the right version of a word, you can pick a category that may have 1/10 the competition of another category and that add up to a lot more ebook sales.

For instance, if you look up “how to be happy” there are around 500 ebooks (as of this printing) but if you look up “happiness” there is 10 times the competition. Not only that but “how to be happy” gets 10 times the number of clicks in Google than does “happiness” so it’s a no-brainer. Between the two, you’d want to stick with the phrase: “how to be happy”. But there are other perameters in Kindle, as well, and we just can’t go through them all in this article. But I’ve give you a good place to start.

The other point I want to make about writing titles that will sell for you is that you don’t want to get so caught up in keywords and SEO that you write a title that is awkward sounding, or doesn’t exactly convey what your ebook or book is about.

Never sacrifice meaning for SEO! If you write a title that sounds like you just threw in a bunch of words for SEO, you won’t sell ebooks or books anyway, and you’ll look like a neophyte or worse, a scammer just out for a buck, so why do it?

Also, if you come up with a great title that doesn’t have the keyword that you KNOW will sell your ebook or book, put it in the subtitle! That’s what John Grey did in “Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: A practical guide for improving communication and getting what you want in relationships. I don’t know if he actually did the research, but “Improving communication” gets 33,100 clicks globally a month, so it’s right in the ball park. And it clarifies what he means in his title for anyone who didn’t get it!

Once you know what people want to buy, you want to get creative. Play with the words until you find something that is compelling, that will hit people emotionally and get them to want to learn more about your ebook or book, or better yet, purchase it on the spot. Great SEO is a good place to start and you need to understand it and use it but don’t let it blindside you.

Too many authors and aspiring authors spend weeks, months,or even years writing a book or ebook and then get urgent and just slap a title on it without giving it much thought and without doing the research to see if it will sell, so they can get it out in a hurry.

And ironically, the longer people have been working on a manuscript, the more likely they are to shortchange themselves on their titles because they start to suffer from what I call “writer’s fatigue”. By the time they get to the title, they are too exhausted to think about it and ready to move on to something new.

This is a BIG mistake, because if people aren’t drawn in by your title, they aren’t going to take the next step with you whether that is look inside at your table of contents or buying your ebook. And, if their next step is looking inside your ebook, you’ll also need compelling chapter headings because each step must sell your potential buyers on the next step, so they will stay engaged until they buy what you are selling.

And even then, you want to keep educating and marketing to them, so they will want to buy your next offer when the time is right-and then the process starts all over again.

So,what constitutes a great title?
A great title is one that grabs the attention of your prospects. That means one that gives them the answer to a problem they are having in a way that connects or speaks to them, so they get excited and want to learn more about your product or buy what you are offering.

Some titles do this in an explicit way and others are more subtle, but the bottom line is great titles grab the attention and interest of your potential buyers.

For example: The title: “Men Are From Mars Women Are From Venus” doesn’t say men and women are really different but instead it implies they are from different planets-a sentiment many men and women can relate to!

Or, “Chicken Soup for the Soul”. It doesn’t say, stories that will sooth your spirit, but it implies it. On the other hand, an ebook like “The 1-eBook Solution” (www.1ebooksolution.com) says straight out: your going to be able to solve your marketing issue with a single ebook. That’s a compelling statement to anyone who is trying to figure out an Internet-marketing strategy and is feeling overwhelmed!

But, no matter which approach you take to writing your title, you need to figure out what the core idea of it is, then figure out the best way to express it, so it’s engages your audience. And to do this takes some time and some thought, so don’t rush it!

It deserves the same attention that you give to the rest of your manuscript. And by giving it your full attention, you’ll increase your sales and profits exponentially!

eBook Titles Matter!

If you don’t write a killer title, chances are, your potential buyers will gravitate
to someone else’s ebook (or book) and you will have lost the opportunity to sell your ebook to them
forever!

So, it’s critical that you write a killer title! And with Kindle, it’s even MORE important
because people are there to buy, so you don’t get the opportunity to market to them. Your title has
to capture their attention right away.

Unfortunately, most people spend far too little time on finding the right title. In fact, I’ve seen
people who have slaved over their manuscript for months (because they didn’t use my 3-day system)
and spend less than an hour on a title, which is crazy!

And that’s the # 1 mistake-not taking enough time with your title and giving it the attention
it deserves! This usually leads to a boring or clichéd title at best and a disastrous one in the worst-
case scenario!

Mistake #2 is writing titles without doing the research first to find out what keywords, and in what
form authors should be using them in the title of their ebooks. Sometimes, using one word instead of
another can greatly increase sales.

For instance, I had a student who was looking at the concept of “turning ideas into income” and she
was using the word “product” as her keyword, but when we did the research in Kindle, it wasn’t selling (unless it had to do with licensing a product) and hers was much more
than that. So, what we did was switch to the concept “innovation”, which WAS selling.

It not only made her ebook more sellable on Kindle, but it also made her put more thought into her title
and come up with a better one! So, make sure you are using the best keywords, both for the Google
Keyword Tool AND for Kindle.

Other times, it’s the version of the word you are using that makes a big difference. For instance, I once
had a student who had bought a whole series of domain names for ebooks he wanted written for him. He also had at least one ebook cover already done when we started working together.

So, let’s say (not to disclose his series) he had the choice between “how to fight depression” and “depression treatment”. The first one currently has 22,200 hits globally a month in the Google Keyword Tool, and the second one has 246,000 hits. That’s a HUGE difference! If you pick the wrong one, you could be leaving a LOT of money on the table. (And by pointing that out to him, he was able to potentially TRIPLE his sales!

But, using the right form of a word can go deeper than the above example. So, here’s another one: “how to be happy”
and “happiness”. ”how to be happy” gets 55,600,000 hits a month while “happiness” gets 5 million hits.
And if you cross reference in Kindle, you’ll find that “how to be happy” has a lot less competition than
”happiness”, so it’s a lot easier to get to the first page in your category (which is where most of the sales are
made).

Mistake #3, which is very common, is coming up with a title that doesn’t make sense to anyone except
you! When I’m working with students and they give me a title that means nothing to me , I ask
them “What does this mean? I don’t get it”; they go into a whole long explanation. But, when I’m on Amazon
, on a website, or in a bookstore, they’re not there to explain it to me! And I don’t have Cliff Notes either!

My point is that your title has to be clear and self-explanatory. If you have to explain it to the reader, it
isn’t working, PERIOD!

Another big mistake, #4, is writing a title that doesn’t give the reader a reason to buy! You MUST
explain what your ebook is about and what the benefit will be to your readers when they purchase it.
Otherwise, they won’t! It’s that simple!

And finally, mistake #5 is make sure that your title is in alignment with what you are going to write in your ebook.
Sometimes, an author gets excited about a title but then writes an ebook from a different angle than from
what the title implies. Make sure that whatever you write makes sense with the title you’ve chosen. And if you find
it’s not working for you, or your readers in your test run and they are confused, CHANGE THE TITLE!

It’s a lot easier to come up with a new title than it is to write a new ebook-even if you REALLY need to
write the ebook you originally envisioned to enhance your business. Don’t worry; you can write that one next. But, when this one is so
close to being finished, just finish it and put it out, then come back and write the first one you had in mind.

If you find you want to chuck this one, it could be a stall tactic on the part of your brain to stop you
from moving forward and making money. Or, it could be perfectionistic tendencies coming out to
sabotage you! Either way, finish what you’ve started, before moving on.

Once you’ve done the research and you know what your niche is, who your target market is, and what you are going to write about, and you’re ready to write, start with a killer title.

A killer title will get you excited and inspire you! It will make it more real for you and of course it will help you sell more ebooks. I also always recommend people start with their title because it keeps them focused on what they are trying to write about.

Many people have trouble staying on point and tend to veer off on to tangents and then they can’t get back to their topic. Others, write a great title, but when they start writing the ebook, they end up with a different “hook” that doesn’t match the title. But either way, when you write a killer topic you can keep referring back to it and it will help you stay on track.

It also helps to write out your outline. What I have my students do in my “3 Days to eBook Cash” authoring program is write out their title at the top of the page and then start the outline underneath that. Each time you add a chapter, look back at your killer title and make sure that it’s appropriate for THIS ebook. If not, set it aside for another ebook later.

When writing a killer title, you want to use keywords that your target market is searching for. And, if you want to sell your ebook on Kindle, as well as self-publish, then you’ll want to cross reference it in Kindle.

Now, cross referencing in Kindle takes some work. There are several perimeters you need to look at including which 2 categories you want to put your ebook in, which keywords you are going to use (you can only use 7), which ebooks are both relevant and popular in your category, and the best-seller rankings.

To find titles that work for self-publishing is much easier than finding one that works for Kindle. But, if you want as much exposure as possible, you’ll want to make sure our title will sell your ebook for you on both platforms.

If you need help finding a killer title, building your platform or both go to www.theebookcoach.com/crazymove and check out the awesome special we’re running!

If you’re self-publishing and your ebook isn’t selling, it could be one of these 5 reasons:

* You don’t have the right title.
* You don’t have a professional, clean ebook cover.
* You’re website isn’t set up properly.
* You’re not marketing it properly.
* It’s not priced properly.
… or a combination of these factors.

(Assuming you wrote a quality ebook!)

If you’re on Kindle and having difficulty selling your ebook, it could be because:

* You haven’t picked the right categories.
* You don’t have the right title.
* You don’t have the right keywords
* You don’t have a professional, clean ebook cover.
* You’re not marketing it properly (or at all!)

For self-publishing, I find that 95% of the people who come to me don’t have their website set up properly, so it’s impossible to market. With Kindle, I find that most people don’t have the right title, they aren’t in the proper categories, they don’t have the right keywords or a combination of all three.

So, we’re offing an After Easter special to help you resurrect your ebook sales!

Self Publishing Review:
This includes looking at your ebook and cover, your title, your keywords, your free offer, bonuses and your website and giving recommendations on what needs to change.
SPECIAL: $97 (regular price $197)
http://bit.ly/selfpublishreview

Kindle Review:
To determine the right categories, keywords, and titles is labor intensive and can be tricky. This includes an indepth review in Kindle, of categories, keywords and titles, as well as your title and ebook cover, providing you with an expert recomendation of the best match(es) for your ebook.
SPECIAL: $197 (regular price $297)
http://bit.ly/kindlepublishreview

Or get both for $247.
http://bit.ly/kindle-selfpubreview

Since these specials are very labor intensive, we have a limited number of spots available to ensure the best quality work and amount of attention for you. These will be available for a limited time ONLY at these prices!

So order today!

The emergence of social media since 2006 has made a huge difference in the way people connect and communicate with each other. Part of the attractiveness of this medium is the visual and interactive capabilities of being able to share ideas, images, and interests with others in real time, and to be able to learn more from people around the world whom we would not have had the chance to meet in any other way.

The newest player in this arena is Pinterest. Even though it’s been around for more than a year, people are just jumping on board with it in a big way. It goes across all age groups, education and socioeconomic levels, so your prospects are most likely already there. This social media site allows you to create theme-based boards where you can ‘pin’ images of things you are interested in.

For example, you may want to create a board around travel and vacations and then pin images of the places you have visited or hope to visit in the future. These virtual pinboards then become the way for you to start conversations with your target audience.

The first thing you’ll want to do is to complete your profile on Pinterest. It’s important that visitors to your boards know who you are and what you do in relation to the images you are pinning.

For example, pinning images of food is much more relevant for someone in the cooking or other food related niche than it would be for someone who is involved in online marketing. On the other hand, pinning images of books can be appealing to others, no matter which niche they are in. I like to think of this more as interests than niches, and that you are relating to people at a more natural and basic level.

The possibilities for driving traffic to your blog, websites, and to your affiliate links is endless with this site. Make sure you have a strategy that makes sense for your business. Just as you would not provide a clickable link to every single thing you talk about on your blog, on the other social networking sites, and in your daily life, you do not need to do this on Pinterest, either.

Instead, choose a few images to pin with your links, and think of this as a way to more fully connect with your followers. This works extremely well. I learned long ago to find where the traffic you want is already going and then to stand in front of the line to receive your share.

Remember that you will want to connect your Pinterest account with your Facebook profile, Twitter account, and LinkedIn profile. The idea is to have a presence in all of these places to reach a wider audience and increase your visibility online. Taking full advantage of social media leads to a more fulfilling online experience, and it can be financially beneficial as well.

When you create an ebook or book and no one has ever heard of you it’s more difficult to get people to buy it. There are millions of titles out there and with the explosion of Kindle and ereaders there are more titles available than ever.

As a reader how are you going to decide which ones are worth your time and money? As an author you need to give your reader compelling reasons to give you a try. First you need a great title to capture the imagination of your potential buyer. Then you need a great cover. Covers are eye candy and humans respond to them, so they have to be attractive.

If you are providing a sneak peak into the table of contents and/or the first chapter of your book or ebook that can help.

On Kindle, people will read the reviews of your ebook. On, your website they will look at testimonials.

But here’s the rub. All things being equal, if you see an ebook or book from Joe Blow whom you’ve never heard of or Top Expert Joe Somebody who you have either heard, or seen, who is world renown and/or has been recommended by someone who’s worked with them, who are you going to choose?

And who’s going to be able to reach more potential buyers and help you sell more books?

Joe Somebody of course!

So, how can you compete with that? You can’t. And, you don’t have to! Instead work with an expert in your field or in a complimentary field! Find one who is willing to co-author a book or ebook with you and piggy back on their success!

That’s what Jim Edwards did when he wrote 7 Day eBook with Joe Vitale. And that’s what I did when I wrote Sell More eBooks, Low & No Cost Tactics To Explode Your eBook Sales & Downloads with Jim Edwards. And now I’m offering a select few the opportunity to piggyback on my success and co-author a book with me.
