FAQ #1: Will My eBook Have The Same Credibility If I Write It With Articles As A Traditional eBooks?

It depends on the kind of ebook that you’re writing-what I mean is, the kind of information that you have. If you want to do a series of tips, or tactics, or a series short strategies -those are done best in an article format. Other ideas such as lists work better in an article format as well. So Absolutely! You are going to have just as much credibility as with a traditional ebook using an article format. In fact a traditional ebook isn’t going to work very well if you want to present what I listed above. The article format would be a better way to go.

Also if you want to repurpose the articles you already have and combine them with new articles into an ebook that will also work well as long as it’s done properly. (Just throwing articles together and calling it an ebook will NOT give you the credibility you want and need online!)

So you have to look at the material you are working and decide if it will work better in a traditional ebook format or an article format.

There is no one right way to do this. It really depends on the information you’re working with and if the information you’re working with is information you can break down into short articles and lends itself to that, then I highly suggest checking out my new workshop, “How to Turn Articles into an Outrageously Profitable eBook in 30 Days Or Less!

It’s my brother’s birthday today! And I want to celebrate. But first I want to tell you a little bit about my brother and how it can help you.

He’s a jockey agent. He works the Southern California racetrack circuit. And he works REALLY hard. He gets up at the crack of dawn, goes to the track to do his business in the morning, watches the races in the afternoon, then networks in the evenings. It’s exhausting!

Plus he work weekends and holidays! And if his jockey gets injured he doesn’t make any money. And if he gets sick he doesn’t make any money.

Now don’t get me wrong he makes really good money, but that’s part of the problem.  He wouldn’t know what else to do that could make him that kind of money so he feels  trapped! And he can’t take a long vacation-which he really needs because of the demands of his job.   He’s been doing this for over thirty years and I hope he doesn’t mind me saying this but I think he’s just plain tired.

Not only that but he has to live near the track and his ex-wife and kids live in Orange County so it’s a real trek to see them.  But he does it as much as he can because he adores his kids. So he puts thousands of miles on his car each year. It’s a really stressful life. Great business model, huh?

So in honor of my brother, I want to help other business owners avoid this trap!  It’s one of the biggest mistakes people make that torpedos their success-  NOT designing your businesses to support the lifestyle you want and deserve. 

What happens for so many people is they  fall into using certain tactics on line that sound good, maybe they start making good money, maybe they don’t, but they keep going and they think if they just did more, so they work 12-14 hours a day. Or they think if they just knew “the secret”  that successful online business people know, so they buy product after product looking for the magic bullet. 

I know I did.  I got on line and listened to all the experts and what they said sounded really good to me. I thought I was going to be rich in two years according to what they told me.  So I started building my business, feeling pretty sure of myself,  and I did it pretty fast, hitting 6-figures in 2 1/2 years. 

And that’s when things started to go south because I had to keep doing what I was doing to bring in 6 figures and it was a roller coaster of boom and bust and hard work,  late nights and repetitive tasks that were boring to me. And I was miserable.

And I wasn’t  alone. I’d talk to colleagues of mine who started about the same time I did, who learned the same strategies and tactics I did, and felt the exact same way: tired, stressed, burned out and frustrated, feeling like they didn’t know where they were going and not having a vision of what they really wanted and a plan to get it.

 You see, it doesn’t show up right away-but  once you’ve been doing it a while  the cracks start to appear when you don’t set it up right. And then it’s a lot harder to get on the right track! (Not impossible but a lot harder.)

And it didn’t start to improve until I changed my business model.

The problem is most people go looking for answers in the wrong place.  It’s like the guy who lost his keys in the house, but the lights are out. So he goes outside to look. Another guy comes a long and asks if he can help. So they both start looking outside.

Finally the second guy says to the first guy, “I don’t see them anywhere. Are you sure you lost them out here?” And the first guy says “No, I lost them in the house.” So the second guy says then “Why are we looking out here?” And the first guy says “Because the light is better out here!”

So on the Internet more light shines on products, strategies and tactics than on how to design your business! But without having the best model for YOU what happens is you’ll wind up feeling overworked, stressed out, depressed, trapped and worse, you could lose the passion that got you on the Internet in the first place and then you might even get sick and/or give up.

So here’s the deal, my brother LOVES to party. So I KNOW he’s going to be partying all weekend long. There are some common mistakes people make creating ebooks using articles that can stop them from succeeding,

Here’s a serious one to get you moving in the right direction…..

Not Compiling Your Articles: Before you can actually get started, you have to compile the articles you already have if you have any, or you won’t know what you’ve got to work with! Seems simple, but it’s amazing how many people don’t do this. 

Instead they go researching one article at a time as they think they need them.  This is extremely time consuming and inefficient. Plus you might miss a real gem or two or three that you reall want to include in your ebook!

So  look at all the articles you’ve submitted to article directories, articles you’ve put on your blog, articles in your newsletter and even articles you’ve submitted to magazines, if you have done that in the past.  You could even extract articles from teleseminar scripts and videos!  

And once you do this, I think you’ll be surprised at how much of the work you’ve already done!

I was talking to my business coach last week and she was telling me to go to a particular site and download some software to use to get my 1099’s in. But it was getting late, my husband who is the more technical one wasn’t home, and we were running out of time.  So I told her I was hesitant to buy this software she was recommending because I’m not good at it and didn’t think I’d have enough time to learn it and use it in the next few hours.

Well I got quite a response to that comment! She basically told me that if I took that attitude I was setting myself up for failure and being a sad sack!  (Those were not her exact words, but it was something to that effect-at that point I couldn’t really hear what she was saying as I had zoned out.)

When she was through giving me “the talk” (and I love her, don’t get me wrong) I told her that it wasn’t a matter of negative thinking; it was just the truth. I know what my strengths and weaknesses are and this is NOT one of my strengths!  I know not to go there on my own-especially when under the gun to get something done!

Then I told her I had just tried to get on a similar site and couldn’t do it and had to wait for my husband to get home. It kept asking for my User ID name and I was looking everywhere for it, but couldn’t find one. When my husband got home, he took a look and showed me that it was asking me to create one, duh!

Even so,  I refuse to see myself as a failure for it. I just accept that I’m good at certain things and not good at other things and this is one of the things I am not good at! I’m a creative type; my mind doesn’t work like a computer.

I believe that this kind of thinking is one of the things that holds people back. They feel like they have to have a great attitude toward everything and suck it up when in fact, they might be better off just letting go and letting someone else do it for them and spending their time on their core competency instead of spending time doing things they aren’t good at.

So know your strengths and your weaknesses and know when to let go of “Positive” thinking! And don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it! It could make you more money and make you a lot happier than listening to other’s ideas about your “attitude!”

Does this story hit a nerve? If so, you may be barking up the wrong tree looking for ebook/Internet success!

I got a call from an alumni of two of my coaching programs: eBook Profit Marketing Secrets and eBook Launch Secrets, he’d also taken an article course with a 90 day article-writing challenge with Rob Schultz. He wanted to  pay me AGAIN to look over all his marketing materials and he was looking at more ways to promote his ebook.

I told him to save his money.  The problem wasn’t his website or  his materials, it was that he wanted results yesterday and kept looking for the quickest fix. Or the problem was that he was afraid of success. I personally think they go together. Because when you are afraid of success, you don’t make money. Then you panic because you aren’t making any money and go looking for the quick fix which keeps you from making money!

But to get back to my former student, he hadn’t increased his sales from when we stopped coaching. And months had gone by. He hadn’t done an ebook launch even though it’s all ready to go,  he hadn’t written articles, and he hadn’t implemented any of the tactics that I had taught him.

What he had done was obsessed over the new FTC rules  (You can learn all about them at http://tinyurl.com/FTCfix)  and then decided he didn’t want to get involved with JV partners which is THE best way to grow your business online!

Now don’t get me wrong, everyone should go over the new FTC rules and know exactly what they mean and how to comply, but he took it too far.  And not getting involved with JV partners online is suicidal! Plus  he was obsessing over whether or not his sales process was good enough to sell his ebooks, even though he already had sales coming in regularly from targeted magazine ads.

And he was trying to find MORE ways to sell his ebooks when he wasn’t implementing the ones  he already had (including the FASTEST way to sell a ton of ebooks with an ebook launch, and a great long-term strategy with articles)!

What To Do If  This Sounds Famililar: If you’re not getting the results you want, the  first thing you have to do is take a deep breath and listen to what you’re telling yourself.  Next ask yourself, WHY you’re telling yourself  whatever it is you’re telling yourself, because sometimes your mind thinks it’s protecting you  when it feels afraid but  it’s really hurting you and keeping you stuck in fear.

Then you have to ask yourself is what you’re hearing real or just  False Evidence Appearing Real?
If it’s fear, and you can’t get out on your own, GET A COACH NOW! A coach will be able to help you sort out what’s real and what’s not, help you see what you’re doing wrong, and get you moving in the right direction. And if you think you can’t afford it, think real hard….because the longer you wait, the longer it will take to turn it around and start making serious online cash!

In this case, I told my former student that he didn’t need another materials review, he needed to pick one or two of the strategies he already knew and start doing them on a CONSISTENT basis and stop looking for something else. And that searching for something else was only stopping him from taking action and getting the results he was looking for!  How ironic, huh?

Article writing can help you break through the fear of writing ebooks because it doesn’t take long to write articles while ebook writing can seem daunting.  So while an ebook might be 80 or 100 pages or more, an article is just 250 to750 or 800 words! So it’s a lot easier for many people to wrap their head around writing a bunch of articles than writing an ebook.

Not only that but if you’ve been online for any length of time, you probably already have articles out there somehwere. Maybe you’ve written articles that you uploaded to article directories, or in newsletters, or blogs or all 3!  And if so taking that content and turning it into an ebook is a great way to leverage what you’ve already done!

Plus, ebooks give you a lot more credibility and expert status than articles. And,  writing ebooks can lead to incredible opportunities you never imagined. One of my students was asked to speak at one of the top confernces in her niche because of her ebook and it was a series of interviews with experts in her field-so she didn’t even write it!

So how do you get started? By taking inventory. Make a list of all the articles you’ve already written so you know what you’ve got to work with!  That’s the first secret.

If so, you’re not alone. Getting started can seem completely overwhelming-there’s so much to learn. And it’s a new vocabulary for many people, especially those who are not tech savvy.  In fact, I was speaking to a friend the other day who was asking my advice on starting her own online business because she was feeling overwhelmed.

She had an idea, but very little money and came to me to find out how to get started. I told her where to go where she could build a website for free (www.weebly.com) and how she could start a blog for free (blogger.com or wordpress.org, but I’ve found wordpress a bit daunting for newcomers) and explained to her how to do the research to figure out what she could do differently than everyone else in her niche…and she chose a domain name.

After looking at the competition and seeing that there was a lot of free information in her niche, we decided she should expand her niche.  She could offer the original service she wanted to provide as an upsell to coaching on the broader subject. Glad we got that handled!

Then she emailed me. She wasn’t sure about moving forward and she wasn’t sure about the domain name. She was afraid the website would look cheap (I had recommended writing a sales page and getting her own hosting). She wasn’t sure she could do it and she wasn’t sure it would work…..and…..and…..and…..

I guess we didn’t get it handled.  But I kept probing and I told her she wasn’t going to like what I had to say, but I let her have it straight.  I thought maybe she just wasn’t motivated enough. She didn’t have a big enough “Why?” so I asked her what would it take for her to get motivated.

Did she have to get a roommate, or worse, lose her apartment before she got motivated enough?  She wasn’t sure. She said she’d have to think about it.

Then I reminded her that she was used to being taken care of. Her mom had been supplementing her income for years and couldn’t do it any more.  But that didn’t mean she was ready to take responsibility and take care of herself financially. So we hashed that out.

Then she said she didn’t know how she was going to get clients and she didn’t feel like she was an expert, and somehow we started talking about what she’d done in the past.

She had been singing for many years at retirement homes and other paying gigs. I asked her how she got started. She said she got a free gig and someone there told her that she shouldn’t do it for free, walked her through what she needed to do to get paid, and the rest as they say was history.

That’s when the light bulb in her head went off and she said she got it; she could move forward. I asked her what made the difference. She said it was familiarity. She said she could relate to that and it made sense to her. I said, “See, you’ve done this before; you can do it again”. She agreed with a sigh of relief!

Getting on the Internet had felt so foreign and unattainable, but when she looked at it as really being no different than what she had done in the past, it became doable and the fear of moving forward just melted away!
