7 Reasons Your Title Is Killing Your eBook or Book Sales!

Wednesday, July 16th, 2014

Without a great title your eBook or book will NEVER sell! It’s an absolute MUST! There are several elements to go into creating great titles and many things that can go wrong, derailing your ebook or book sales and profits. Below are 7 reasons your title isn’t working:

1. Your title is not in alignment with the content in your ebook or book.

Too many times, I see authors write a title that doesn’t represent what is in their ebook or book. Or, they write one THINKING that it represents their book, but then, they write it and take it in a completely different direction. If you don’t fix it, it will confuse your audience. They will think they are getting a book on one subject and end up with another one. This will lead to frustration, anger, and a lot of refunds as well as bad reviews! Make sure your title is in alignment with your topic!

2. Your title is putting people to sleep!

Too many authors spend so much time and energy that by the time they start thinking about a title they have run out of gas. They get lazy and they slap a boring generic title on their ebook. If your title is boring it won’t sell! Make sure you give your title the time and attention it deserves!

3. Your title doesn’t have the right keywords!

If your title doesn’t have the keywords in it- the ones that people are searching for- no one will be able to find it. And if they can’t find it, they can’t buy it! So, make sure you do the research and put the right keywords in your title or have us do it for you!

4. Your title doesn’t make sense to anyone but you!

When you write a title, it makes sense to you or you wouldn’t have written it. But, you have a frame of reference. You know what is inside the book. Someone seeing that title for the first time doesn’t have that frame of reference and may not have a clue what you are talking about. When I come across a title that doesn’t make sense and I ask the author what it means, he or she often goes into a long explanation of what the title means. Unfortunately, a reader doesn’t have cliff notes and you won’t be there to explain it. So make sure that your title makes sense to anyone who sees it, not just you!

5. Your title doesn’t tell your audience the benefit of why they should read it!

Nobody is going to purchase your book or ebook if they don’t see the benefit of doing so! You have to let your audience know what they are going to get out of reading your book or ebook and make sure that it is something that they can’t get anywhere else. If they see more than one book with the same exact benefit they will either buy from the expert who is best known, or they will become confused and not purchase anything.

Here’s an example of why this is so important.I once worked with a chiropractor who wrote a book on how to heal back pain naturally. But, another expert who was already well known in that niche had a book out on the same subject. When I asked the chiropractor what the difference was between his book and the other expert’s book, he told me in great detail. But, I didn’t get that from the book title, so I had him change it to include what made it unique so potential buyers could tell the difference between the two books.

6. Your title doesn’t connect emotionally with your audience.

If you title doesn’t connect with your audience it won’t sell. You have to know who you are talking to, what they want, and how to use language to connect with them, A really great example of this is the book, Skinny Bitch, A No-Nonsense Tough-Love Guide for Savvy Girls Who Want to Stop Eating Crap and Start Looking Fabul… The authors clearly know who they are speaking to. They are savvy girls who don’t mind being a bitch! They don’t want to stop eating bad food, they want to stop eating CRAP! And they don’t want to look good, they don’t even want to look fabulous, they are SOOOOO cool that they want to look Fabul!

7. You didn’t think it through and turn it in to a series of ebooks or books instead of just one.

Okay, so this one won’t KILL sales exactly, but it will slow them down considerably! The truth is, you can make a lot more money from a series of books or ebooks than you from just one. So think ahead. Figure out a title that you can use to create a series. The reason this works so well is that it allows buyers who find one book to find all your other books!

For instance, I wrote a #1 Best-seller called How to Make Money Writing Quick Non-Fiction eBooks….Guaranteed! Now, I’m writing another ebook called How to Make Money with Books and eBooks Using Bonuses, Testimonials and Upsells! This gives me the freedom to write book after book in the same series. Come up with a series and let your books cross-pollinate!
