eBook/Book Writing: You’ve Picked Your Topic, Now, What’s Your Hook?

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

A hook is the thing that pulls your potential buyers in, gets them to look at your ebook, buy it, read it, and hopefully buy some more from you and it is crucially important to your success as an author.

It has to capture the imagination of your potential buyer in a way that feels new and interesting. It might be who they will become from reading your ebook like Skinny Bitch, or what they could become like The Millionaire Next Door, or a benefit they will get from reading your ebook, or book, like Start Late, Finish Rich. But, it has to make them curious enough about the premise to want to buy it and hopefully read it.

And, when you hit a nerve with your market, it can make you rich. You can potentially sell a lot of units-even if you think you’re writing in a niche that is saturated. For instance, there are thousands of weight-loss books, yet people continue to write them, and many of them have become #1 best-sellers!

Why? Because people are desperate to lose weight, but what works for one person won’t necessarily work for another person and when one doesn’t work, they will try another one and another one and another one.

And that means more money for you! But, that’s not all. You can create a whole business around your hook if you come up with the right one. Skinny Bitch, for instance, started out as a book called Skinny Bitch: A No-Nonsense Tough Love Guide For Savvy Girls Who Want To Stop Eating Crap And Start Looking Fabul. But, it’s now a cottage industry. They’ve got cookbooks, they’ve got Home, Beauty & Style, they’ve got a guide for becoming a hot new mom, a novel, Skinny Bastard for men, fitness DVD’s and more!

The right hook lends itself to much more than just an ebook, or book. So, take the time to figure out what your hook is and if you can turn it into a cottage industry of your own. The time you take to do this before getting started will pay off in spades if you do it right.

The key is to come up with something that can produce several ebooks/books, not just one, as well as other products, coaching and/or other services, is memorable, captures the potential buyer on a gut level, and has a domain name available that makes sense, is easy to remember, and ends in .com

Digital Publishing: Create A Killer Offer For Your eBook FIRST For More eBook Success!

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

buy nowBefore you write an ebook, think about what you want to offer for those readers who want to take the next step with you after reading your ebook. This is important because it may influence what you decide to put in your ebook and what you decide to leave out of it.

It can also influence where you put your offer inside of your ebook.

First, let’s talk about the offer itself.  It has to be an incremental offer; you wouldn’t generally offer a high-end program at the end of an ebook. Instead, you’d offer something that was a reasonable step up.

If you are going to offer something with a big price tag, you’ll want to create a  teleseminar, webinar, or video or video series that sells them into the program. People generally need to hear you and/or see you before they will buy a high-priced program. Some will even want to talk to you first.  So give them a way to get what they need to make the buying decision.

Next, let’s talk about where you put your offer in your ebook.

If you have difficult material that your readers may need help with all the way through, then you’d want to put your offer on every single page.

If you write your ebook in sections with an action plan at the end of each chapter, then you might decide to put your offer at the end of each chapter.

Or, if it’s important that they read the entire ebook before thinking about the next step, then you’d want to put your offer at the end of your ebook.

Free Or For Sale? How To Price An eBook

Sunday, February 17th, 2013

right_priceBefore you write your ebook, you need to decide if your ebook is going to be a free ebook, or if you are going to sell it.

This decision will determine what you want to put into it and what would be better to leave out for later ebooks as well as how you want to publish it.

Authors sometimes feel compelled to put EVERYTHING they know into a single ebook, but that’s not a good way to go.

When you give people too much information you can overwhelm them.  It’s better to write several smaller ebooks than one big one-it’s easier for your readers to consume,  and you’ll also make more money doing it this way.

If you’re just starting out and you want to establish your credibility and expert status, you’ll want to create a free ebook first.

And if you’re giving your ebook away for free, you shouldn’t give away ALL of your best stuff.  Instead, give some juicy information that will help and impress your readers, but leave them wanting even more.  Once, they’ve received some great material that they can use, they’ll think to themselves, “If I got THIS great stuff for FREE, I can’t wait to see what I’m going to get when I buy the next eBook!” So, they’ll be ready to buy your next one!

If your ebook is going to be for sale, you have to decide how much information you want to give and price your ebook accordingly.  On your own site, you can generally sell ebooks for $17, $27, or $47 (depending on the niche, what you call it,  how in-depth the information is, the value of your bonuses-and you should have them, as well as what other ebooks  in  your niche are selling for). And if you call it a system or a program, you might be able to sell it for even more. But,  don’t call it something that it isn’t just to try to get a higher price.

Case Study: I was working with a client who was working with another business coach who told her to call her ebook a  “tool kit” because it would allow her to sell it for more money.  But, it WASN’T a tool kit.  So, calling it that would have thrashed her credibility.  Luckily, she found me before she launched and we fixed the problem without devaluing her ebook! NEVER MISLEAD your audience!

Next, how you publish your ebook will depend on how you want to price it as well and we’ll talk about that in our next blog post.

Digital Publishing:The Secrets To Doing A Successful Keyword Research For More Sales & Bigger Profits!

Friday, February 15th, 2013

Doing keyword research sounds like a difficult task, but it isn’t really.  However, just the idea of it can stop  many authors and aspiring authors from getting it done and moving on.

And to complicate the matter, authors often think that they need to buy expensive software to help them complete the task.  In the early days of the Internet, before there was a Google Keyword Tool, that was true, but it’s no longer the case.

Anyone can do the research necessary just by using these FREE resources: the Google Keyword Tool and Kindle,  or Amazon, depending on whether you project is going to be a book or ebook (and sometimes it’s both if you target market can be found in both places).

To do keyword research, you have to think about how your market would search for what you have to offer and enter those keywords and phrases into the Google Keyword Tool. You may not think of all of them, but you, at least, need to think of enough of them to get started. Once you do that, the keyword tool will suggest other words and phrases as well that may work for you. (You have to be in your Adwords account to see them; if you don’t have one, go get one, it’s free.)

The problem is that while people are pretty clear about what to enter when they are looking for something online, they often forget to use the same thought process when thinking about how other people would search for them online.

So, for instance, if I were looking for white, triple A, New Balance tennis shoes, that is what I would enter because that is EXACTLY what I’d be looking for, I wouldn’t  want black tennis shoes, or wide tennis shoes, or Adidas tennis shoes. And if I didn’t get specific, it would bring up a lot of these other types of tennis shoes that I’m not interested in, so it would just make it harder for me to find what I want-I’d have to wade through more listings.

When you are looking for keywords and phrases, you have to do the same thing; be as specific as possible about what you offer and what potential buyers would look up to find you.  The better you understand this, the better keywords you will put in, and the better results you will get.

When I was younger, I dabbled with acting, and it has served me well as an author and coach. When I close my eyes and imagine I AM my target market, it’s a lot easier to come up with the right keywords and phrases.  Try it, it might work for you too!

But, it‘s not enough to find keywords and phrases that people are looking up, you also want to know what people are buying. And that’s where Amazon/Kindle comes in.

Once you have your keywords,  you want to cross check in Kindle. Sometimes, doing this will give you more keywords you hadn’t thought of and other times, it will show you that you target market isn’t buying on Kindle. When that happens, you’ll want to also check Amazon as some target markets just don’t buy ebooks, but are big sellers in the book section.

Think of doing research like a treasure hunt! Enjoy the process!  When you find those keywords that get thousands of hits and are actually making sales, you’ve hit the mother lode. Do a happy dance and relish in the fact that you’ll be on your way to Internet success!

eBook Writing: 5 Strategies To Stop Distractions From Torpedoing Your eBook Writing

eBook Writing: 5 Strategies To Stop Distractions From Torpedoing Your eBook Writing

1. There is never a perfect time to write your ebook, so don’t wait for that moment to come. You may wait a lifetime and never find it! In fact, telling yourself that, can stop you from ever writing one. So, stop saying that to yourself!

The corollary is: don’t look for excuses not to write. Have you ever said to yourself, “It’s too noisy, I can’t write here? Or, “I’m too busy, I can’t write now”? As Napoleon Hill said, “Start where you stand and work with whatever tools that you may have at your command. Better tools will be found as you go along.”And the great thing about ebook writing is that you don’t need any tools to do it beyond a pen and paper, or your computer, which, since you are reading this, I’m pretty sure you have.

But, if you’re prone to these thoughts, I suggest two resources: The first is my new ebook, Don’t Sweat Writing An eBook, 8 ways to write or repurpose content into a successful ebook, which will be dropping very soon. In it, Ann McIndoo, gives a process you can use to get you writing no matter how you are feeling. (You can order a copy now at www.dontsweatwriting.com)

The second is a book called “Little Voice Mastery”, which teaches you how to deal with the negative voices in your head. You can pick that one up at:
www.7ebookmistakes.com/specialreport (You can also get it on Kindle for 99 cents)

eBook Marketing Success: It’s Not About You

Saturday, February 2nd, 2013

If you want to be a successful author, you have to realize it’s not about you! It’s about your target market: what they want, what they need, and what they are willing to spend money on.

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t focus on what you are passionate about and skilled at-you should.  But, you have to figure out how you can take your passion and skill set and come up with a topic based on them that dovetails into what your target market wants, needs, and is willing to pay for.

To do this you have to come up with a new angle, a new hook, or a new point of view that hasn’t been explored yet in a book or ebook. Otherwise, it won’t sell;  it will just regurgitate what is already out there. And when you aren’t original, you have to ask yourself, “Why should anyone buy my book/ebook when they can buy the original?” They have to have a reason,  and it has to be a good one (not just price).

The good news is that there is always a new angle, so no niche is really every saturated.

If you don’t believe me, think about weight-loss books.

There are thousands of them, and many have become best sellers because each one is a DIFFERENT diet! And not every diet works for everyone. So, people keep writing them and people keep buying them!

Here are just a few of the best selling weight-loss books…

-Atkins for Life: The Complete Controlled Carb Program for Permanent Weight Loss and Good Health

-Skinny Bitch: A No-Nonsense, Tought-Love Guide for Savvy Girls Who Want to Stop Eating Crap and Start Looking Fabul

-The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss

-The Zone: A Revolutionary Life Plan to Put Your Body in Total Balance for Permanent Weight Loss

What they all have in common is that they are all unique! Each lays out a completely DIFFERENT plan for losing weight. And they all work for some people! But, each person has to find the one that will work for them! And that’s key; you won’t be able to sell your ebook to everyone, but you will be able to sell it to those people who resonate with YOUR message.

So, come up with a unique idea and then figure out HOW to say it in your title so it resonates with your audience and makes them feel like they just HAVE to buy your ebook!

Just remember, it’s not about you, it’s all about them!

When you keep your target market in mind, come up with a unique angle for your topic that appeals to them,  and communicate it the right way, you’ve got a recipe for successful ebook writing and big profits!
