If you think you can, you can; if you think you can’t you can’t. This is true of any pursuit in life including ebook writing.

So, before you start make sure you have the right mindset.

First figure out what is motivating you to write your ebook and make sure it’s a big enough “why” to KEEP you motivated when the going gets tough. And it usually does at some point. Some people will hit a road block while writing their ebook  (if they haven’t learned how from me) and other’s will hit one during marketing, but it’s the rare person who has smooth sailing all the way through the process. (Just being honest here!)

Once you know what is motivating you to write your ebook, make the commitment. DECIDE that you are in it for the long run; you are going to get it done, market it and make money with it.

Tell yourself, “Other people are making excellent money selling ebooks and I can too!” Create affirmations that spur you on and put them around your house where you will see them on a regular basis.  Find an accountability partner to keep you on track or a coach. Do whatever it takes to stay in the right frame of mind and I have no doubt that you will become a successful ebook author.

The number-one secret to gaining self-confidence is to believe in yourself. Know that you can achieve anything that you set your mind to.

But how do you do that?  Some people are lucky. They had parents who told them while they were growing up that they could do anything they put their minds to. Write an eBook! 81% of people say they want to write an ebook but less than 1% ever will. People look up to authors.  Plus, the word author comes from the word “authority”; writing an ebook makes you an instant expert!

Writing an ebook also makes you have to learn the subject your writing about in depth  if you don’t  know it already. And if you do already know your subject, it will elevate your status because now people will KNOW that you know your stuff!

But don’t worry, in the areas where you don’t know enough to be an expert right away, find other’s who are and work with them. You don’t have to know EVERYTHING there is to know about your subject right out of the gate! You just have to know SOMETHING people want to learn and put yourself out there so they know you exist! Today, I teach my own brand of marketing which is a bit different from what I learned from them and that’s how it should be. Don’t create your ebook and then try to find a markt because there may or may not be one and if there isn’t one, then you’ve just wasted a lot of time and energy. Instead, the first step should be doing the research.

Figure out what you are passionate about and skilled at first. Then figure out what target market has a problem they want solved that you have the passion and skills to solve and write about that!

If you follow this advice, you’ll know if your ebook is going to be successful before you write a single word! And if it isn’t going to work, you’ll know to pick something else to write about that WILL.

Doesn’t that make a lot more sense?

It’s a great feeling to write an ebook KNOWING that there will be an audience who will buy it once it’s written.  Without this knowledge, it’s stressful because you’re just HOPING that someone will buy it. And when they don’t, you could become very discouraged, decide that ebooks just don’t work and give up on them-which would be a shame because ebooks are a BILLION-dollar business! So don’t let your enthusiasm for your topic cloud your judgement.  Do your homework, make sure it’s going to be something people can’t wait to buy, and then start writing!

It’s “FOCUS”.

You may have heard this somewhere before: Focus on what you want and not what you don’t want if you really want something”…..and then, commit to it.

What happens a lot on the Internet is that you find something that looks interesting and you start to learn how to do it and then something else comes along and it’s hyped up as the next new thing and then you want to drop what was interesting to you yesterday and start something new. This is what is called “Shiney new-object syndrome) Sound familiar?

If so, you’re not alone….

It’s a mind game that sellers know works- that why they do it.  They tap into your emotions and find the keywords and phrases that will get you to jump ship from what you’ve started and hop onto what they are offering.

And each one promises more hope-it promises to be more lucrative and easier to do than the last one. They may even do free demonstrations to SHOW you how easy it is.  However, once you get in to it you see it’s not as easy as it looks.

And when you buy into this, what happens is you overspend on products and services you don’t want, don’t need and probably will never even open. So, not only do you end up broke, but you never get anything done that will actually make you money. Eventually you get discouraged and give up.

The way to get past this is to FOCUS! Focus on what you really want, put blinders on, don’t let yourself be distracted by the emails and the offers flooding your inbox.  Figure out what you want and focus on it with all your strength, with all your heart, with all your might.

When you are focused, you won’t let anything stop you because you’ll know exactly where you are going.  And if you don’t know quite how to get there you will figure it out, or hire a coach to guide you through it-someone who has done what you want to do.

And if what you want to do is make money online, and you are an expert in something (or an expert in training) then I suggest that you consider writing an ebook. An ebook will help you build a targeted list of buyers, increase your credibility and expert status, give you the ability to make passive income, market other products you have or could create for yourself, give you a framework you can use to create all your other marketing materials and help give you the financial success you deserve.

And knowing how to write ebooks is very powerful because it’s not going to change. It’s a tactic that you can use over and over-and it never goes out of style.

Before you write your ebook take some time to figure out what your motivation is.

Why do you want to write this ebook?

What will it mean to your business success?

And to your life?

Because the clearer the answers to these questions are to you, the more motivated you will be to write your ebook.

And motivation is important because it is what will propel you to finish what you’ve started and to actually market your ebook once it’s finished ,so that you can make money with it.

Without motivation nothing gets done, it’s easy to give up when the going gets touch, and  there’s a much higher chance that you will not finish writing your ebook let alone get it out into the marketplace.

So, don’t start writing until you understand why you are writing it and then remind yourself daily so you don’t forget and lose momentum.

Most people decide on a topic and just start writing, or they ask their spouse or their mom what they think of the idea and if they like it, it’s a go.  But that is NOT the way to write an ebook that you can make money selling.

Instead, what you want to do is research your topic, do a keyword search by going to the Google Keyword Tool (which is free) , and see if it’s something that people are looking for.  You also want to see exactly which phrases they are using because knowing that can make a huge difference in your topic, and how you approach your topic which in turn can affect the the number of copies you’ll ultimately sell.

So, let’s say you decided to write about an eating disorder. While anorexia gets 2,740,000 unique hits  a month,  bulimia gets 1,222,000.  While these are both huge numbers, the fact is that you can get in front of  more than twice as many people writing about anorexia than bulimia.  So, if you knew that and you had the choice, you’d want to write about anorexia.

Next you’d want to look at what are the best phrases to use that describe anorexia.  And again, the numbers vary greatly.  If you used a title that included “Overcoming Anorexia” you would see that only 880 people are clicking on that keyword phrase each month.  But Anorexia Treatment gets 27,100 a month  So, knowing this would influence the way you write your title and how you describe Anorexia throughout your ebook as well as on your sales page and in your marketing materials.

Knowing your metrics and using them to craft your ebook and your ebook-marketing materials are key to your success. Most people thing they are going to write an ebook and become rich but for 99% of ebook authors the big money is not in writing the ebook but in coaching or teaching the content that you are presenting in your ebook.

That means that you have to know your material and be good at conveying it to others.

But if you’re not right now, that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to fail. The truth is you only have to stay one step ahead of the folks you are coaching or teaching to do a good job. And the more you do it, the better you will get at it, plus you will learn more tricks, tips and strategies along the way  until eventually you really will be a master at what you are teaching.

But what you don’t want to do is try to teach something that you have no aptitude for-even if you are passionate about it because it won’t work.

Here’s an example.

I love to sail, but I sail maybe once or twice a year and I never go out without an instructor because it’s so long between sails that I forget what I learned and I have to learn it all over again! So I could never teach it. I’m not even good enough to teach a first grader. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love feeling the wind through my hair as I sail away!

Another example. Copywriting. You could charge $1500 for a good sales letter. And if you love to write that might be a fit. But if you find that you can only do one a month and your nut is $3,000 a month, you’re going to go under pretty quickly. So you can see why you have to be good at what you are trying to do.

And believe it or not, most people do not know what they are good at. We often take for granted the things that we do well. We don’t realize that we have a special talent in a particular area so we often overlook how we can best be of service to others in our business.
