If you’re doing an event and you want to find joint-venture partners through Facebook, read this excerpt from my interview with Mari Smith at the Virtual eBook Expo 2.

Mari: ….I would look at the groups and the pages. Look to see – just ignore all the rubbish. like I’m seeing here, the Kinky Punishment eBook, what the hell, just bypass that….. So just hop in there, cruise around and see what people are saying in the group and see how you can actually request people to be your friends.

Ellen: Oh, cool. Okay and now you can actually then use that to find gatekeepers and also just to find people who are maybe going to be affiliates.

Mari: Exactly. Joint-venture partners.

Ellen: So how do you approach them?….You don’t want to then go in there and say “I’m looking for you to help me” that you definitely don’t want to do.

Mari: No, you would go individually one-on-one. I’m seeing, I’m looking at a group right here ….. There’s 329 members something like that.

First I would approach the creator of the group and introduce yourself. You approach somebody sending them a message. You can send them a message or you can go ahead and just invite them to be a friend and you include-when you hit add as friend-actually like for example that person there.

Click on his name and then you can click send a message. You can send a message, whether it’s private messages to people who are not yet your friends. If you’re going to ask to be his friend anyway, then I would just click “add a friend” and then whenever you click add someone as a friend you always add that personal message. It says “add a personal message”, it’s a little link.

You’re limited in characters but I would just say “Hi George, John or Jim, I just came across your Facebook group about (your subject) . I’m an (your subject) expert too and I’d love to connect with you” and that’s it.

That’s just a little introduction. Then when that person comes back and accepts your friend request, then you can start getting into dialogue. You can do that through the private email, you don’t have to do that on the wall, back and forth on the wall; you can do it back and forth on the wall, when it makes sense, when you want to have your conversation public.

Otherwise you’re going to go ahead and take it private and talk back and forth through the Facebook email. This is where it can be time consuming but then you can also ultimately leverage yourself, because you’re looking for people like anybody who has an eBook group who’s maybe doing something different than you would be a terrific collaboration partner, joint-venture partner.

Ellen: And the point is anybody can do this in any field. You just go to search and we put in eBooks but you can put in health, self-improvement, you can put in whatever your subject is.

Mari: Exactly. It’s one of the best places one of the best strategies to find related people, to find people to connect with and build out your network with people that really have share those common interests or that have a specific interest that’s related to your area of expertise.

Ellen: Even fibromyalgia, I went to fibromyalgia and there are 194 groups just on that. I did that because I know I had a client, a student in one of my workshops, actually I have quite a few that have written about fibromyalgia.

Mari: God, wow. That’s amazing.

Ellen: Yeah. (There are) support groups and different things. I have a feeling this is going to work in just about anything you know? You have to kind of pick your spots because it can get very time consuming, but the truth is that you do need to be working on expanding your network and your list building every single day.

This is an excerpt on writing great titles from my interview in the Virtual eBook Expo 2
Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski, best-selling authors, and Ph.D’s interviewed me.

Jim:One of the difficulties Judith and I had in writing our books is creating titles, because the title has to do two things, it has to1. tell the person what the book is about and number2, in such a way that it draws the person toward the title and into the book.

I’ll tell you what Ellen, I’ll write three books this year if you’ll write all the titles, because they were so difficult for us to write. Ellen, how do you create your titles? How do you do that?

Ellen: That’s a great question. First, you actually brought up a very good point without saying it, which is-cause we write quality, but a mediocre eBook with a great title will do far better than a great eBook with a mediocre title.

Jim: Plenty of books with great titles have sold a ton.

Ellen:Yes so that’s number one, titles are important. One of the ways you can do it is to model other titles that have been successful and a perfect example is Think and Grow Rich. Now there’s Speak and Grow Rich, Meet and Grow Rich there’s a million of them.

Jim: Right.

Ellen: The One-Minute Manager by Ken Blanchard and even Mark Victor Hansen someone of his stature wrote One-Minute Millionaire, so there are certain things that just grab people’s attention. Another one is The 4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss that was originally going to be called The Vagabond Millionaire.

What Tim did was he got online, he took advantage of the Internet, he tested it and he asked people, which one they liked better. So it’s a combination of finding things that are catchy.

I go way deeper into this in the Quick-Start 3-Day eBook Authoring Workshop, but there are many ways that you can do it. You can use repetition, get organized and get published. You can use something that you turn from a verb to a noun, so luck becomes The Luck Factor, The Moving Cure. There are a lot of different ways that you can do it.

We don’t have time to go into all of them here, but that really is the key to doing it. Looking at what is catchy or sparks curiosity, things that have certain sounds that go together and then the other thing is sounds that go with what you’re doing.

There are soft sounds and hard sounds, so if you have like Spontaneous Healing, with the ‘h’ sound we think of healing. Power Aging is a hard sound, you think of power, so you want your titles to be congruent with what you’re doing.

The last one I want to leave you with and I love this is there’s one called…

Judith: While you’re thinking I want to tell one of my favorite stories about a title, which is a young girl who has a worm business. She grows worms and sells worms to gardeners who want the soil enriched by her worms. And the mother said to the girl…

This is a true story; the mother said to the girl you should have a name for your business. The young girl said I do it’s ‘Wormily Ever After’. Now it’s only three words, but you want to keep your title short. And, we’ve all heard happily ever after forever, so how easy is it to remember Wormily Ever After?

Ellen: Yes and those work. Those can definitely work, but here’s the one I was trying to think of that made me fall over. A model wrote this, it’s a huge success and it’s called Skinny Bitch.

(My understand is) They aren’t experts they’re just people who understand the streetness of it, I guess is the way to say it versus the academics who would write How to Lose Weight and give it more of an academic kind-of-a- thing.

It’s coming up with these things that are catchy that gets people’s attention that hits them emotionally. That is what is most important in a title. Again, like I said we don’t have time to go too much more into it here, but that’s the crux of it. We go way into that in the Quick-Start 3- Day eBook Authoring Workshop.

When I was a teenager I was NOT into Donny and Marie, thank you very much! I grew up on the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Led Zepplin, James Taylor, Carol King…..I think you get the point! But today I’m coming out of the closet. I love Donny and Marie. But I admit it doesn’t really have anything to do with their music.

I’ve been through Marie’s divorce, her battle with postpartum depression, her weight issues, the suicide of her son, and the death of her parents. And I’ve watched her on Dancing With The Stars, fainting and all, and Donny too (In fact, he’s sooo likeable and such a good entertainer, I was rooting for him to win-which he did!). I’ve also seen Donny protect Marie and defend her and they are very REAL.

They sit down with Mary Hart on Entertainment Tonight and tell her what’s really going on in their lives, they don’t seem “Hollywood” at all. They are very LIKEABLE. And because they seem very genuine I also TRUST them.

Now if you’ve been online for any length of time, you’ve probably heard that what’s important is that people know, like and trust you.
So they’ve definitely succeeded in that arena. In fact, I like them so much as people, that I would love to go to their show in Las Vegas-something that would have horrified me growing up!

And if I went to their show, and I liked what I heard, who knows maybe I’d even buy a CD!

But the point is that when you are real, when people have the opportunity to know you like you and trust you, they will buy from you. If Donny and Marie could get me to buy show tickets trust me, it will work for you too!

This is an excerpt from my interview with Adam Urbanski from The Virtual eBook Expo 2.

Adam:Very good question and I’m glad we’re opening with this, because there are a lot of eBooks out there and obviously the people who are listening to this (Virtual eBook Expo 2) program already know that eBooks are definitely not dead and they won’t be dead ever or at least not for a very long time.

They can still be turned into a successful and highly profitable business, but you’ve got to add a few more components to your eBook business to explode your profitability and we’ll get deeper into this in a moment.

Why are so few succeeding? It’s because most people make very basic mistakes with creating their eBooks. Let’s just talk about a few basic ones.

1. One of them is following kind of a, me too strategy.

Meaning they see something that seemingly works online and they think “Oh, I can do that and they start doing the same thing.” Sometimes it does work, but you have to know the complete strategy to make it work. Typically what people replicate is just what they see on the surface.

If you think about building a car what makes the car function and drive is all the technology inside that’s hidden; the engine and electronics that you can’t see. When you look at the car and you say this is gorgeous, I want a car just like this, I want to build one, you build what you see on the outside.

A lot of people get side tracked with cutesy titles, clever domain names, designing the graphics, headers and writing perfect copy, but what they don’t know is what actually drives the success of that one particular eBook business they tried to replicate inside. What’s the engine? For me, it’s the business model. They forget to look at this and that’s one of the big mistakes.

2. Another huge problem for people is that they forget that the eBook is not a business.

They focus on the eBook as if it were a business instead of focusing on the target market or their audience. Their audience and their problem, the audience’s problem, in other words in short, their market is where the business is. A lot of people spend time focusing on creating the perfect eBook.

It’s edited perfectly, designed perfectly, perfect graphics there’s not a single dot missing over any I’s, all the T’s are crossed it’s an ideal product, but it’s not the one that the audience wants, so that’s a big problem.

3. They forget to identify what sort of lead generation strategy they will use to actually make that eBook sell.

It goes back to just knowing the market.

-Where you can find this market?
-What sort of problems do they have?
-How big is that market?
-How much do they spend on solving specific issues?

When you create an eBook you have to realize that you are basically starting a business and it’s just as if you started a retail store, but it would have cost you a lot more money to start the retail store. It’s a lot more prohibitive, the barrier to entry is higher.

With eBooks, virtually anybody can get started tomorrow, overnight. They can have a business. They can have an eBook, because there’s no high cost barrier to entry, but the principles are exactly the same.

If you open your store in the location where there is no traffic or no customers you’re going to fail. With the same principle, if you create an eBook in a market where there are no customers and no traffic, nobody sees it, there are no sales and there is no success.

People just don’t do the basic legwork, the homework.
